Ultimately, if I can't get the gun perfectly flat, I prefer to have the sights settle a tiny bit high rather than too low after the gun has cycled as I can maintain a visual "lock" on the front sight and then push it down a smidge into proper position for the follow up, vs having the front sight dip low and out of my visual line so that I have to lift and visually re-acquire the front sight for the next shot. If the sights are too high, then I'll go to the next harder spring until the gun shoots acceptably flat. Really watch the sights through the shot and see where they stop (as in gun orientation) after the shot. Personally, and I claim to be no expert, I start with as light a spring as I think I can get away with and slow fire with my competition load. I think the correct answer is "it varies" depending upon a host of factors, including the shooters preference for how he/she wants the gun to cycle for follow up shots. Your ability to grip the gun is also going to affect how the gun cycles and returns sights to target. 45acp's into bear loads for camping, but they have to change out the springs in order to keep from cracking their frames. For an extreme example, I've heard of guys "uploading" their. Or, is it just a matter of personal preference and feel?Ī light vs heavily loaded round plays into it as well the way the gun itself is balanced. That is, start with the heaviest spring and keep changing to lighter until reliable function is achieved. If that's true, then, it would make sense to run the heaviest spring you can, while still achieving perfect function. I would also assume that a heavier spring would slow the slide as it travels back, and, get it into battery faster, helping to return the muzzle to the original point of aim. I would assume that a lighter spring would allow the slide to recoil faster and harder, and cause more muzzle flip (up).

So what happens to the gun as the recoil spring is changed? Of course, the gun needs to run 100%.But they can function with several different springs weights. What is the purpose? I understand function, and, I'm not asking about that. I was hoping someone could explain the goal when changing recoil springs.

I've looked through a lot of the posts on recoil springs, and, I'm sure it's answered somewhere here, but, I can't find it.
